Ancillary Task: Vinyl Cover

The group decided as we were constructing a 'some what' vintage music video as well as making a CD cover, a Vinyl Cover should also be made. This will represent the age, even more enhancing the vintage feel.

When browsing through images of vinyls, the group realised that most vinyls had a label in the middle which incorporated text and in some cases images. This label is also used as an signifier, by looking at this label the audience should instantly know what song it is, which artist it is by, which album it is from and in some cases the genre.

House Style

The group felt an important aspect of the project, that had to be agreed upon early was the house style. The group created a style sheet which would give us a basis outline to follow through out the music video project, as well as the ancillary tasks.

Ancillary Tasks: T-Shirt

I undertook the T-Shirt task by firstly looking at other artists t-shirt designs and selecting the conventional features of them.

After the research was undertook the group individually started to design using the logo and colour scheme agreed in the house style.

Ancillary Tasks: Website

Website Research.

Another mood board was constructed showing different pages of famous artists websites. This enabled us to identify similarities and differences between them and also realise which where the most effective and worked the best.

The group identified the main aspects of the websites and went straight into designing using the house style that was chosen.

Ancillary Tasks: Website and T-Shirt

As well as constucting two individual ancillary tasks the group decided to go one step further and construct a website and design a t-shirt between us. We decided on these two specific things as they reach out to all the individuals for different aspects. The group decided on the website as every famous artist has their own website and we thought ours needed the same and also the t-shirts because they are easy to do yet look effective once designed and done.

Ancillary Tasks: CD Cover

The second individual ancillary task i intend on doing is, constructing a CD cover and packaging

Ancillary Tasks: Music Magazine Front Cover

As part of the project is to construct two smaller ancillary tasks, i decided to do some research on music magazine front covers as this is one of the ancillary tasks i decided to do. I mainly looked at pop magazines as this is the main genre the group is focusing around and the main genre of the song itself. i constructed a mood board of this genre of magazines and decided to make a list of the main conventions, as i intend to follow the conventions to create a professional and realistic magazine front cover.

Using this list of conventions i started to design, sketch and annotate a few drafts myself to help provide the group with a range of different layouts. This would help as the group and i can then sit and discuss the features that we liked and did not like and create an effective layout which we all liked and could work with.

Pitch

The group and I constructed a powerpoint presentation containing all the research that had been done so far. The group presented the pitch to a media audience explaining exactly what we had done so far and what we intended to do in the near future aswell as what the group would like to acheive by the end of the project.

A few of the mood board that were previously constructed were used as it gave a better insight on such things that they demonstrate including location and mise-en-scene.

Story Board

The group begun to construct the story board which will help us along the way. The group decided that the story board would be as full as possible including mise-en-scene, location, camera shots and angles, iconography and positioning of people. The group decided to do this so when it came to constructing and filming there would be no hesitation as the group would know exactly how and what to do. This will save a lot of time and allow the group to re film if needed.

In total there are 56 shots which create the song, below are 6 of these shots:

Research- Location

As the group has already annotated the lyrics we had a good idea on all the locations that could be included in the video. The lyrics of the song include such places as Waterloo, London (at winter time) and a pebble beach. We intend on useing the locations included within the song, but also intend on using a few more such as Camdem. The group decided that Camdem would be a sufficient place to film as it has a quirky atsmophere and fits in well with the genre.

Below is a mood board showing the locations mentioned and intended on being used.

Research-Genre

The group constructed a mood board focusing on genre, as the group need an understanding on conventional aspects including, layouts of album covers, styles, fonts, colours.

The group also constructed a wordle to show what people compare this genre to. As you can see the main responses were retro, upbeat and catchy, which will help us achieve a more professional video as the group can make sure that our music video includes these.

Final Song Decision

After the group got the audience feedback results, we read through the comments and agreed that Olly Murs- Thinking of Me was the right song for the group. It has sufficient iconography throughout the song which would easily be included within the music video.

Research -Song

After the group annotated the lyrics it was still a hard decision on which song to choose as there were good ideas for both songs. Each song used completely different styles, mise-en-scene and iconography in completely different ways. It was then decided to get audience feedback and constructed a quick questionnaire to see which of the songs were most popular and a reason why.
Here are the main responses:

When the group finished the preliminary task, the class split into separate groups containing for people, making sure each person in the group have different strengths. Once this was decided the group sat down and discussed song and ancillary ideas

Preliminary Task

The class was set a preliminary task to construct an open day video. The class was split into groups and each group was given a different topic to capture, using stock footage and footage that will be recorded. This task was designed to teach the class how to use the software Premier Pro and play around with it, this would enable us to feel more confident and be more experienced when constructing the main project.

The Preliminary task that was given to the group i was in, was to produce two sections, the first on 'Curriculum' and the second on 'Special events'.

Research- Song Annotation

When the group brought the song choice down to a final two, the group thought it would be best to analyse and annotate the lyrics, giving an understanding of the story and an idea of how the different songs can be processed into different types of videos and in different ways.
Below are the two songs annotated.

Reseacrch-Genre of song choice

The first thing the group had to do was to decide on a song. The group decided to construct research into the different types of genres of music, before even looking at songs as this would allow the group to identify which genres were preferred. The group decided to construct a basic questionnaire also to get the audiences feedback into genres.

After researching genres the group came to the conclusion that the most popular genre with in and without the group was pop, so further research into this particular genre was applied. After analysing some songs the group brought it to a final two, 'Ellie Goulding-Your Song' and 'Olly Murs- Thinking of Me'
